Therapists for college students near University of Colorado Boulder
ShorePeak Psychiatry and Wellness
I have been working in the outpatient setting for over 10 years. I've rotated through a student mental health clinic during my training and have worked with many college aged students. College can be an exciting time of change and growth and finding purpose and connection. College can also be a big adjustment, as you acclimate to a new setting, new responsibilities and being away from home for an extended period, sometimes for the first time. It is often during these big life changes that you may need a little extra help settling in, getting into new routines. Through a combination of therapy and careful use of medication, we can work on getting you in a place to fully engage in and enjoy your college experience.

I believe the foundation of good health is rooted within oneself. My passion lies in supporting individuals who struggle with acknowledging their strengths and empowering them to tackle challenges with confidence. Whether individuals face diverse challenges or just need a listening ear, I am dedicated to providing a safe and supportive space for all. I place a high priority on meeting my clients where they feel most comfortable and working collaboratively with them towards their goals. Having worked in a range of settings such as schools, community health centers, and private practice, I bring a wealth of knowledge to advocate for each individual's unique needs. I specialize in accentuating strengths and equipping individuals with effective tools to achieve success, with one of the key tools being self-regulation. Are You Still Struggling to Feel Better When You Feel Overwhelmed? Have you already seen medical professionals or therapists to help recover from an accident, injury, medical procedure, assault or childhood abuse, and you still don’t feel significantly better? Does it seem as though you are: Anxious after recurring trauma nightmares? Suffering from PTSD due to military actions or war? Terrified that you will have yet another accident? Overwhelmed with anxiety and don’t understand why? Tired of swinging between angry outbursts and going numb? Depressed because you feel like damaged goods after a trauma? Exhausted from dealing with digestive problems, migraines, and chronic pain which medicines don’t seem to help? Body-centered approach Using a short-term natural therapy approach, I help you to understand and trust that your body knows exactly how to recover from a serious threat. By attending to body sensations as well as thoughts and feelings, trauma symptoms can significantly ease or go away. As a result, you can: Go into strange environments feeling more relaxed: you won’t worry about looking foolish by over reacting to a sound or someone’s comment. Know you can return to a more normal work or school life and even have energy to take on new projects. Have fewer angry outbursts, which scare family members away. Stop reliving the memory of the trauma over and over. Feel confident that you know if it’s ok for someone to touch you. You are not the only one How you are feeling is a very common way people respond to the stress of trauma. Many of my clients feel shame or judge themselves for not being able “to cope”. It is not unusual to hear them blame themselves for getting so upset over a “minor” accident. They feel stupid or “too sensitive” about having allowed something that happened long ago to still affect them. Many believe their life has spun out of control and they find it difficult to get on with their lives. I do accept Victim's Compensation payments

Do you feel numb or disconnected lately? Struggling to manage emotions, stay focused, or keep up with everything on your plate? Maybe perfectionism is running the show—even when you’re exhausted. Maybe you’re using drinking, weed, or other habits to cope. Maybe guilt, shame, or feeling “not enough” hits you more than you let on. Relationships might feel confusing or repetitive, or you might find yourself always on alert, restless, isolating, or overworking because slowing down feels uncomfortable. College can also bring up painful experiences you didn’t expect—old wounds, traumatic events, or something that happened (like sexual assault or abuse) that changed how you feel about yourself, others, or the world. Adjusting socially, emotionally, and academically can be harder than anyone talks about. If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. And you don’t have to figure it out by yourself. I work experientially, integrating somatic approaches, EMDR, psychodrama, and other in-action modalities to help you reconnect with yourself, shift stuck patterns, and feel more grounded and in control of your life again.

I work with Men who want to fear less and feel more. Men whose insecurity thrives despite their many successes. Men whose high stress is keeping them out of balance, inside and out. By working through unresolved issues from the past, in the present moment, I help Men embrace and express themselves more fully. If these words are resonate with you, I want you to know that you are not alone. Many Men are finding themselves struggling with these issues and are finding their way through it. Together we can find our way through your unique situation. Together, we can learn to embrace who you are and allow your health to shine through.
Kate Schettler Counseling and Creative Arts Therapy
I believe being a student and learning is an opportunity, and sometimes having a consistent therapist alongside can make the difference and help you get the most out of the opportunity. Being in school is not a singular thing, it’s not just about being the student in class who does assignments and gets the grade. In addition to being a student, there is one’s mental, physical, and emotional health, there are often bills to pay, and often the needs of others to meet. There are many other parts of ourselves and our lives that intersect with and function together with being in school. It can be overwhelming. It can be an adjustment. Transitions are big and important. There are our lives both in and out of school. Students are often also family members, caregivers, working individuals, or living with loss, trauma, depression, stress, or a medical illness. Students also learn differently, including some with accommodations for success. Some students find they need to confront an overwhelming need for perfection, or perhaps one is facing a particular challenge that is important to look at rather than look away. Therapy can be helpful when you are in school. I like to meet a client where they are at and begin by understanding you. I offer my warmth, and capacity to listen and to hold space even when the workable feels unworkable. I offer my experience and knowledge in counseling and in the creative art therapies, and hold value in an inclusive and affirmative lens. I enjoy working with students in higher education, meeting them in the places where school intersects with other parts of self that must be given care and attention, or to look more closely at or develop one’s career journey. I employ both talk therapy and the use of creative, expressive processes such as movement, poetry, art, music, story, and metaphor. The work is collaborative between counselor and client, being open about therapy goals and progress. I place value on your inherent strengths, and believe that we all hold motivation and an innate capacity to heal and be the very best versions of ourselves. Please call or email me to schedule a free consultation call.

My goal is to help you find new ways to relate to the world and to enable you to embrace your experiences more fully and bravely. I hope to do this by creating a safe, open, and collaborative environment where you can experiment with new ways of relating to yourself and others. I bring in skills from therapies, such as ACT and DBT, to help you find your strengths and develop your resources. And I recognize that the most growth occurs in an authentic relationship which balances compassion with challenge and emphasizes social justice and intersectionality. Shannon Gavin
Hi, I’m Shannon Gavin, LCSW. I made the move to Colorado in 2020, right after earning my master's degree in Social Work. Since then, I've had the opportunity to work with a broad range of mental health challenges, which has helped me develop a flexible and personalized approach to therapy. I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all method. Instead, I tailor each therapeutic approach to fit the unique needs and personality of the individual I’m working with. You can expect a laid-back and approachable atmosphere when we work together, but I’m also direct and straightforward when the situation calls for it. My focus is on empowering you while providing a warm and supportive space where you can feel safe to explore your feelings. Whether you've experienced inpatient behavioral health care or are seeking outpatient therapy, I bring experience and genuine care to every session. I’m here to support your journey and help you find practical, meaningful ways to improve your mental well-being.

There’s no guidebook for life. It’s easy to feel like you’re falling short when you’re just trying to get through the day. Maybe you’re feeling exhausted, overwhelmed or unmotivated, but continue pushing yourself because you believe there’s no other option, all the while feeling that you’re never measuring up. It might feel like a foreign concept to slow down and listen to what you truly need in each moment, but with the right support, making this shift is possible, and it might give you the relief you need. I’ll focus on helping you learn to be kind and compassionate toward yourself so that you can start living your life from a place of “already enough,” and begin taking actions that truly support your well-being. Sometimes, learning to accept yourself as you are is the first step toward meaningful change. Together, we can explore what might be getting in the way of becoming the person you want to be. I'm here to help you learn how to embrace the person you already are to create the life you desire. If this feels like the right path for you, I’d love to explore working together.
